Neil's family and friends are hosting a walk, tag rugby and BBQ on May 18th at Suttonians RFC to remember Neil who passed away in May 2023.  Join us for a walk around the hill of Howth or enter a team in the tag rugby tournament... or just pop in later for a drink.  There will be two walk options.

Getting there

The location is Suttonians RFC, Station Road, Sutton. Limited parking is available on the grounds plus pay and display parking at Sutton Dart car park across the road. We do recommend using the DART to get there. The DART takes 25 minutes from Tara Street and runs approx. every 30 minutes on Sat. Bus routes are H3 or 6 with stops close to Sutton Cross. For the south siders who are driving, it can take longer than you think!

Tag Rugby

The draw has been made and will be circulated separately. For those who registered to play as individuals, we have put you on a team. We have also added players to registered teams as given the schedule, player rotation will be needed.

Players and associated teams will be available at registration on Saturday as well as the rules and formats. We have 5 groups with 4 or 5 teams per group. Each match will have two x 7 minutes halves.

It’s a fun format so enjoy!!

Unfortunately given the number of teams, it is not possible to walk and play tag but the option to walk before registration is available is available. Allow 2hr to 2.5hrs for the longer walk.

Walkers

We have two routes planned. Walk A is 10Km and Walk B is 6.8Km

Walk A

  • The longer route will start at 15:00 from the club car park with a route that goes through Sutton Cross, past Santa Sabina Secondary school, and Howth Golf Club. We’ll turn down onto Cenanchor Road with the cliff path at the end of this road. Turn right onto the path heading back towards Sutton. The path ends at Strand Road then following the road back to Suttonians.
  • While the views over Dublin Bay are wonderful, the path is uneven. Please ensure appropriate walking shoes or runners are worn. If it rains between now and the weekend, the path may also be muddy.

Walk B

  • The shorter route will start at 16:00 from the club car park with a route that goes through Sutton Cross, past Santa Sabina Secondary school, and Howth Golf Club. We’ll turn right down onto St Fintains Road turning left on to Shielmartin Road (opposite Sutton Park School). The road turns right and will bring us down to the coast and Strand Road, joining the Walk A route. The follow the road back to Suttonians.
  • Maps available at registration

Please note

  • Volunteers will be along the routes wearing orange tee shirts and available to guide you and provide water refills and snacks at various points.
  • We’ll have a mobile phone number in case anyone falls ill or wishes to return back to the club house. This number will be is 087 499 5300. In the unlikely case of more serious injuries on the cliff path, please dial 112 and ask for the coast guard. Howth Coast Guard are aware of this walk and have offered assistance in such circumstances.
  • The route involves crossing a main road at various points. PLEASE be careful when crossing as drivers do speed on various points on our route.
  • There are no toilet facilities on the earlier parts of these walks. However, Sutton Dinghy Clubs on Stand Road is available and thanks to the Dinghy Club for their assistance.

Weather forecast

At the time of writing the forecast is for dry weather with a NE breeze. Sunshine is expected but with the breeze and wind direction, it may be cold in the shade.

BBQ

We thank Suttonians RFC not only for managing and hosting this event, but for also providing the catering. A BBQ will be provided from appox 1800 onwards. There is a lot of players and walkers to feed, so please be patient.

Memories

Part of the reasoning behind this event is to remember Neil and to share memories and stories with his family and friends as we come up to his anniversary. We hope to have a facility to allow his friends to record fond memories on video on the day or please record and email a video to neilremembered@gmail.com.  If wish to share them publicly, please record and share on the Instagram page.

Registration

To allow us to plan for the day, we would appreciate if likely walkers and players could indicate their interest by emailing us on NeilRemembered@gmail.com or completing the form on the registration page of this site.
